Baghdad summoned Izzat Ibrahim out of fear of war crimes issue
Iraq, Politics, 8/20/1999
The deputy chairman of the Iraqi Revolution's Council leadership, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, arrived in Baghdad on Thursday night after returning from a trip for medical treatment in Austria described by some reports as having been cut short after calls were made to arrest him and try him as a "war criminal."
The departure of Ibrahim from Vienna on Wednesday coincided with calls to arrest him, while there are reports in Washington in that the US is trying to push the UN Security Council to accuse Hussein of carrying out "war crimes" in the course of US efforts to topple him. CNN had a report that indicated that the US has not received much support for its position on pursuing war crimes against Iraqi officials at the UN Security Council.
On Wednesday night Ibrahim arrived from the airport to the house of the Iraqi ambassador in Amman, Sabah Yassin, after he stopped his medical treatment in Vienna amid escalated calls to arrest him and try him as a war criminal.
The calls were advocated by organizations and figures concerned with human rights.
