Japan finances fisheries project in Morocco
Morocco-Japan, Economics, 8/20/1999
Japan will contribute 438 million yen ($ 3.3 million) to finance the second phase of a project to build a fishermen's village at Souiria Kdima, located between the atlantic cities of Safi and Essaouira.
An accord to this end was initialed here on Thursday by Moroccan minister in charge of fisheries, Thami Khyari and Japan's ambassador to Rabat, Hiromi Sato.
The project second phase, to be completed by the end of March 2001, provides for the construction of a fish market, an ice manufacturing plant, a fishing boats repair workshop, shops and an environment-friendly waste incinerator.
Japan which had contributed 549 Million Yen to the first phase of the project, has already financed-- thanks to non-reimbursable donations-- two other similar villages in Morocco and also cooperates with Morocco in matters of vocational training and scientific research.
This project is part of a social program devised by the fisheries ministry to promote traditional fishing, improve fishermen's income and working conditions, raise their living standards and integrate such projects in the economic fabric.
With national territorial waters extending over 1.2 million KM2 and with a 3,500 km long sea coast, Morocco has huge sea resources and harness over 840 fish species. In 1998, Sea products exports have earned Morocco $ 740 Million (7.4 billion Dirhams), recording an increase of 10 % compared to the previous year.
