Morocco to host meeting of Inter-Parliamentary Union in September
Regional-Morocco-International, Politics, 8/20/1999

Morocco will host next September 8-9 an Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting to prepare for the 3rd Millennium Parliament General Assembly to be held in 2000 at UN headquarters in New York, MAP reported.

The second preparatory meeting to be hosted by Morocco will adopt the official statement to be submitted to the Inter-Parliamentary Union for adoption at the 3rd millennium assembly.

The IPU's secretary general, Anders B. Johnson, told MAP's office in Geneva that the Rabat meeting will address a major topic related to relations between the world body and the IPU and the need to consolidate bonds between the two bodies.

He added that in this new era of economic globalization, several issues that used to be addressed at a national level now need to be tackled at the United Nations level and other international organizations.

In addition, he went on, the UNO is increasingly aware of the need to consolidate cooperation with national parliaments as several issues and topics discussed by the UN require the collaboration of parliaments, when it comes to the ratification of treaties and conventions, for example.

He said the Rabat meeting will be attended by the speakers of some 15 parliaments, six members of the IPU executive council, chairman of the IPU council, the IPU secretary general and a representative of the UN secretary general.
