New chairman for the Israeli liaison office in Tunisia
Tunisia-Israel, Politics, 8/19/1999
The new chairman for the Israeli liaison office in Tunisia, Benjamin Oumar, arrived recently in Tunisia to replace Shaloum Cohen, who was of Tunisian Jewish origin from the city of Nabel.
Oumar's appointment falls in the course of the agreement reached by former Tunisian Foreign Minister al-Habib Bin Yahya and his then-Israeli counterpart, current Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in Barcelona in 1995 to establish diplomatic relations between the two countries after relations had been confined to "two communications channels" in the Belgian embassies in each of Tunis and Tel Aviv.
The Israeli liaison office in Tunisia is composed of the chairman and deputy chairman Jadoun Behar, an administrator and a security official.
The US pressured Tunisia in coordination with Israel to convince it to host the fifth session of the economic conference for the Middle East and North Africa. The Tunisians refused due to the obstruction of the peace settlement on all tracks at that time.
