Lebanon-Israel, Military, 8/18/1999
Lebanese security sources said that three Israeli soldiers were killed and another six wounded in the violent confrontations which took place in the occupied part of south Lebanon between Israeli occupation forces and the Lebanese resistance.
Since Tuesday morning the Lebanese resistance forces have clashed with the Israeli forces in south Lebanon in retaliation for the death of a member of the resistance.
The fighting raged for more than two hours in al-Salouki valley, which lies between Khurbet Soloum village and the border village of al-Houla. Lebanese security officials said Israeli dead and wounded were airlifted by an Israeli army helicopter to Israel.
The Lebanese resistance said in a statement that it launched attacks on Israeli troops in Wadi al-Slouki to retaliate for the death of resistance commander Ali Hassan Deeb, better known as Abu Hassan, who was killed in a roadside bomb explosion in the southern part of the city of Sidon on Monday.
Both the Lebanese resistance and government blamed Israel for the bombing, although no one has yet claimed responsibility.
The Israeli army had no comment on the attack, but Israeli television said Abu Hassan was on top of Israel's most wanted list for carrying out acts of resistance against the Israeli soldiers in occupied south Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes carried out two new air raids against the Burket al-Sawwan area situated between Barachit and Safad al-Bateikh. The Israeli warplanes fired air-to-surface missiles on the area.
On Tuesday morning the Israeli artillery concentrated its shelling against civilian areas and districts in Shaqra town, and the attacks resulted in material damage to the town's high school. The Israeli shelling was also concentrated on the towns of Tabniet, Kafra, Yater, Safad, al-Bateikh, Haris, Hadatha, Barachit, Aqmata, Jabal al-Zaatar and the woods of Sujoud al-Rayhan.
Meanwhile, the Israeli artillery positioned in Muheibib, al-Tibeh and Abbad also shelled the western sector of the south Lebanese area. The shells fell on the towns of Zibqin, resulted in wounding citizens Abbas and Fatemah Bzei, according to Lebanese security sources.
Lebanese security sources added that at 3 p.m. Tuesday, the town of Barachit came under bombardment. Moreover, the Israeli forces fired heavy machine guns against the populated areas in Eita al-Jabal and Hadatha, the Lebanese security sources added.
Further reports from south Lebanon said the Lebanese resistance on Tuesday afternoon attacked Israeli occupation positions in the hills of Barachit, Beer Klaab and Kassaret al-Aroish. In a statement, the Lebanese resistance said their groups attacked, using heavy artillery guns and missiles, the said positions. Direct hits were achieved.
