Hariri asks to meet with President Lahoud
Lebanon, Politics, 8/17/1999

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has asserted that all Lebanese concerned with public affairs "want this rule (of President Emile Lahoud) to succeed because in his success the whole country will succeed."

Hariri added that he and Lebanese Parliament member Walid Jumblatt are ready to cooperate with others and that "hands are stretched to cross Lebanon to the land of safety." Hariri's statements were made during a luncheon held by the al-Safaa club at the Summerland hotel in the presence of Jumblatt and several sports and political figures.

Hariri continued, "We stood against the rule and the national attitude, and Lebanon has suffered a lot to reach such a national Arab attitude for the sake of which the Lebanese people paid a heavy price of martyrs."

Hariri added, "We are passing through a critical phase and very crucial and difficult. You know what happened today (yesterday) and particularly in Sidon when one prominent leader of the Lebanese resistance was killed, eventually at the hands of Israel. This incident is a signal for all of us on that the country is passing through a sensitive stage, therefore we have to stand together. I also say and say on behalf of Walid Jumblatt that our hands are stretched to cooperate with all and ready to reach Lebanon to the land of safety. This is a real invitation coming from the heart and the conscience."

He added that the al- Safa Club represents the mount of Lebanon in the heart of Beirut, adding that the mount and Beirut are always united and will remain so.

The Lebanese daily al-Safir said that Hariri contacted the presidential palace in Beirut and asked for a meeting with Lebanese President Emile Lahoud.
