Arab Games opened in Amman

The 9th Arab Games were officially opened in Amman on Sunday. The inauguration ceremony was attended by King Abdullah Bin al-Hussein in festivities in which festive games were performed and Jordanian heritage and folklore performances demonstrated.

Senior Arab sport figures attended the ceremony.

Princess Alia, the sister of King Abdullah, carried the flag for her country.

The inauguration included a sppech from Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid; the head of the committee organizing the tournament, Prince Faisel Bin Hussein; Prince Fahd, the chief of Arab Sports Union; and Gamal Mubarak, the son of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The inauguration was attended by Queen Mother Nour and jordan's royal family.

The athletic events started four days before the official opening ceremony took place so Arab athletes can finish in time for the August 22-29 Athletics Championships in Seville, Spain.

More than 4,500 athletes from some 20 Arab states are participating in the various competitions of the Arab championships. Kuwait is the only country boycotting the games.
