Confrontations in Somalia
Somalia, Politics, 8/16/1999
Six persons were killed and another ten wounded in armed confrontations that took place during the past two days between an armed militia and Somali security forces. The security forces, which try to impose the law in the absence of a real government, were able to deter the attackers.
Somalia has been without a real government since January 1991, after President Muhammad Seyad Berri was toppled and the country was divided into warring armed groups, where several attempts to unite them failed.
