Jordanian Premier, Arafat held talks in Ramallah
Palestine-Jordan, Politics, 8/13/1999

During his meeting with the Chairman of the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, Jordan's prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdeh briefed him on the results of the Jordanian diplomatic moves concerning the peace process and the results of contacts held by Amman following the visit of the Israeli foreign minister David levy to Amman on Tuesday.

Al-Rawabdeh said that he had asserted to the Palestinian leader that Jordan "stands as usual with our Palestinian brothers in order to have all their full rights complete and to establish their own independent state with holy Jerusalem as a capital." Al-Rawabdeh added that his country "will not hesitate to make contacts with "all sides" in order to promote peace on the Israeli-Palestinian peace track forward.

The BBC quoted political sources in Amman as saying that the question of the refugees was on the forefront of talks between al-Rawabdeh and Arafat. A controversy was raised in Amman concerning the question of refugees after the Jordanian dailies quoted the speaker of the Jordanian Parliament Abdul Raouf al-Majali as saying in one of the " close-door dialogues" that he will stand in the face of offering the Palestinians civil and political rights in Jordan, in preservation of their Palestinian identity.
