Fayrouz takes part in Geneva appeal's launch
Lebanon-International, Culture, 8/13/1999
Marking the 56th anniversary of the signing the four Geneva agreements which had drawn the basics of behavior during times of war, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and another 14 world public or political figures, including the renowned Lebanese singer Fayrouz signed in Geneva an appeal for the world's peoples and governments to honor these agreements.
During the celebration of launching the appeal, Fayrouz sang "The land is yours" by Jubran Khalil Jubran.
In an interview with Monte Carlo radio she thanked the International Red Cross, which invited her for the appeal, saying, "I also would like to thank the international organization for inviting me to take part in this world appeal." Fayrouz added, "Our country is small and forgotten and nobody talks about the sufferings of its people. They forget to remember ours. I felt that through my participation I would make them remember us."
Fayrouz added that "art has no frontiers" and can reach the whole world, therefore it is more easily able to express the feelings of peoples.
She continued, "We leave behind an age... filled with wars and sufferings and peoples' catastrophes. Hopefully, the third Millennium will bring to us peace, because it is ripe time for the world to rest."
