Damascus denies secret contacts with Israel
Syria-Israel, Politics, 8/12/1999
Syria on Wednesday reiterated its denial of any secret negotiations with Israel, indicating that Damascus " does not negotiate from under the table."
On Wednesday the Israeli radio said: in the absence of any real progress in the Israeli position in the peace process, certain Israeli mass media returned to talks on secret mediations and secret negotiations between Syria and Israel and quoted well-informed sources in Israel as describing the events of such claimed negotiations."
The Damascus radio added " that Damascus had clarified through its responsible and balanced policy that it does not negotiate from under the table or outside the ceiling of its declared and overt stand concerning the peace process" The radio asserted the inevitability of restoring back the Syrian Golan heights until the June 4 1967 border line and that table of negotiations is waiting for Israel's return back and from the point at which 80% of the work agenda was completed, a fact admitted by both the US and Israel."
