Arab League condemns Israeli aggression on al Aqsa mosque
Regional, Politics, 8/12/1999
The Arab League on Wednesday condemned the recent Israeli aggression on Al Aqsa mosque, which it considered the latest in the chain of Israeli practices designed to further restrict the religious freedoms of Palestinian faithfuls and to undermine the sanctity of the holy shrine.
The Arab League general secretariat warned in a press release against continuation of such violations which contradict the announcements of new Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak to work for peace and build mutual trust with the Palestinians.
The statement said the Arab League follows up with profound anxiety the mounting events in occupied Palestine and calls on the international community, especially the United States, the European Union, the Vatican and the Non-Aligned Movement to stop the Israeli violations, which seek to consolidate Israeli hegemony on Arab, Muslim and Christian sanctities.
The statement called on the international community to force Israel to guarantee freedom of worship and the human rights of the Palestinians.
Israeli police closed a window in the wall of Al Aqsa Mosque, which triggered Palestinian protests.
