Arab diva sings at solidarity feast in Geneva
Lebanon, Culture, 8/11/1999

The Lebanese diva Feyrouz will perform during the solidarity feast organized by the International Red Cross committee in Geneva.

Feyrouz, who headed for Geneva on Tuesday, said she had been asked to take the floor during the event but, she added, "I prefer to sing as songs bring me closer to people."

Feyrouz is one of the eleven personalities invited by the committee to join the launching of a solemn call on behalf of victims of armed conflicts throughout the world. The U.N. secretary general is also part of these personalities.

In her statement to reporters upon departure for Geneva, Feyrouz, 66, paid tribute to the red cross which, she said, "did not forget Lebanon during the war" (1975-1990).

Lebanese transport minister, Najib Mikali, said Lebanon is happy that Feyrouz has been associated to the event, calling the diva "a national richness that gave a great deal to Lebanon and to the Arab world."
