Lebanon, Qatar stress full Israeli withdrawal
Qatar-Lebanon, Politics, 8/11/1999
Lebanon and Qatar have asserted their commitment to the establishment of a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and the liberation of south Lebanon and the Golan from the Israeli occupation.
A joint statement released at the conclusion of the visit of the Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani to Lebanon said the two sides made a comprehensive evaluation of the Middle East peace process' development and stressed their adherence to achieving a just and comprehensive peace according to international resolutions to ensure full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories in south Lebanon, the western Bekaa and the Golan and restoration of the Palestinian people's rights, especially their right to self determination and the establishment of their own independent state with Jerusalem as a capital.
The statement indicated that the two sides reviewed conditions in the Arab arena and reiterated their comitment to Arab solidarity, which provides for protecting the rights of the Arab states and restoring the usurped rights.
Meanwhile, the emir of Qatar asserted that genuine peace in the region means complete Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights to the June 4, 1967 borders and immediate and unconditional withdrawal from south Lebanon.
In a speech he delivered on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Lebanese Parliament, the emir of Qatar said that real peace means the restoration of the legitimate national and political rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their own independent state.
In a similar speech, the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, attended by the emir of Qatar, stressed the relations of "destiny and joint track between Syria and Lebanon."
He indicated the two countries' solid experience of maintaining cooperation and coordination that have opened the possibility of a comprehensive settlement under the umbrella of international legitimacy and the land-for-peace formula.
