Levy in Jordan today, says Israel ready for peace with Syria
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 8/10/1999
Israel Radio said on Monday that Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy 's will meet today in Amman with Jordanian officials, including King Abdullah II, who will acquaint him with the mediation efforts he recently made between Israel and Syria. The radio added that Levy will brief the Jordanian leadership on the political contacts and the attempt to resume peace negotiations on the Syrian track.
Meanwhile, ABC News reported that Levy said after the meeting about negotiations with Syria "We are from our side ready at any time, at any level suggested in order to push the peace process forward." Levy said there was no need for mediators, who visit Israel and Syria "sometimes in their own names and in the names of others." Adding "It is now the time for both sides to do the act directly ... also there is no point of putting forward preconditions in order to see the reaction of the Israeli side,'' he said.
ABC News added Levy said Israel would be at the height of implementing the Wye River peace agreement with the Palestinians when Secretary of State Madeleine Albright visits the Middle East in late August or early September. "We also want to see ourselves free to deal with the Syrian track,'' Levy was reported as saying.
