Sudan plans to upgrade water resources
Sudan, Economics, 8/9/1999
Sudanese Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Kamal Ali Muhammad said that Sudan has a complete national strategy for upgrading water resources including Aybara river, the Blue Nile, and the main river.
He said that two reservoirs were built on the Blue Nile, the first in 1925 and the second, El-Resiris, in 1966, adding that they have already started to remove the walls of El-Resiris Dam to expand its capacity from nearly 3 billion m3 to 7.7 billion m3.
He also said there is a plan to build two new reservoirs. The first new dam (El-Satit) will be built in the Karabana region, on a branch of the Atbara river, while the other dam is to be built on the Atbara at El-Remila.
Muhammad stated that the designs have been completed so as to start the implementation. He added that the plans for the Nile river dictate the construction of reservoirs for generating electric power and upgrading irrigation along the river.
