US scientists in Syria to watch the eclipse
Syria-Regional, Science, 8/9/1999
Syrian Prime Minister Mahmoud al-Zou'bi on Sunday presided over a meeting to review measures taken to deal with the eclipse which will take place on Wednesday, and to discuss proposals to avoid risks resulting from it.
The Syrian health minister stressed that the ministry did not and will not license any type of imported glasses to be used during this phenomenon to ensure the safety of the citizens.
For his part, Syrian Information Minister Muhammad Salman said Syrian television and radio on Wednesday would transmit live broadcasts of the eclipse from its outset in Europe until it reaches its peak in Ein Dewar in Hassaka in Syria, to enable the citizens to see it.
Meanwhile, a delegation of US scientists arrived in Syria at the beginning of this week to see the eclipse, which will be total in the far north of the country on August 11.
The US researchers, led by a member of the Harvard-Smithsonian
Center for Astrophysics in Washington, will see the eclipse in Ein Dewar village in al-Malkeyah district, far northeastern Syria, a center which is described by a source at the Syrian Ministry of Higher Education as the most convenient for monitoring the full eclipse phenomenon.
The full eclipse in this area will last from 10:20 GMT until 13:00 GMT.
