Garang views importance of establishing trust through specific steps by Khartoum
Sudan, Politics, 8/7/1999

The personal representative of John Garan, the leader of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army, Nial Deneik, asserted that it is important for the Sudanese government to take many specific procedures to qualify the atmosphere for the beginning of discussions and negotiations with the opposition Democratic National Alliance to reach a comprehensive national reconciliation in Sudan.

Deneik, a high-ranking official in Garang's movement, said in a discussion on August 5 with Voice of Africa radio, which broadcast its program from Tripoli, where the meetings of the opposition Sudanese Democratic National Alliance took place recently, that, "In the alliance, we have agreed during our last meeting in the Libyan capital on the Libyan initiative to achieve the national reconciliation in Sudan."

He added, "In the alliance and in the people's movement, we will do what is necessary so the efforts exerted for finding peace and reconciliation in Sudan become fruitful, yet we hope that the Sudanese government takes specific measures to qualify the adequate atmosphere for the beginning of discussion and negotiation with it."

Deneik also said these procedures are topped by the Sudanese government's recognition of the Democratic National Alliance and lifting of the embargo on political activity so that the work of political parties whose activities were banned can resume.
