Algerian mediation to settle Eritrea - Ethiopia dispute

Eritrea on Thursday received proposals from the Algerian mediation committee on peace with Ethiopia and will give its reply to this proposal within two weeks.

AFP quoted Yaman Gaberyab, the political advisor to the Eritrean president, as saying that his country is preparing a final file to be discussed during the meeting expected to be held at the conclusion of the two meetings in Algeria, which is currently presiding over the Organization of the African Unity.

At the end of last week, Gaberyab held a visit to Algeria in order to debate the Eritrean viewpoint on the implementation of the peace agreement as well as to deliver to Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika a message from the Eritrean president.

However, most diplomats in Asmara find in the Algerian plan the best opportunity to quickly reach a peaceful solution to the conflict taking place between the two neighbors in the African continent.

The Algerian plan which is called "arrangements for implementing a peace agreement" was proposed last month during the convening of the recent African summit in Algiers, and the Algerian plan then won the approval of the two sides.

Eritrea and Ethiopia have been fighting since May 1998 over the issue of demarcation of their joint borders, estimated at a length of 1,000 kilometers, and the fighting has so far resulted in thousands of deaths and created hundreds of thousands of refugees.
