Sudan denies striking Congo
Sudan-Congo, Politics, 8/7/1999

Sudan denied on Friday claims made by the rebel Congo Liberation Front that Sudanese planes launched an attack on the northern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which resulted in killing hundreds of people.

Sudan's ambassador in South Africa, Nasser al-Din Idris said these claims are fabricated, that his country has always been careful not to get involved in this war and that Sudan recognizes President Laurent Kabila as the legitimate president of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Idris added that Sudan offers Kabila only political and moral backing and that foreign intervention is behind the conflict and instability in the African Great Lakes region. He stressed that the US wants to maintain control of the African continent.
