Libya and Italy confirm adherence to implementing Rome declaration
Libya-Italy, Politics, 8/6/1999

Libya and Italy confirmed their adherence to implementing the Rome declaration signed by the two countries in July 1998 to turn the page between them and push bilateral relations toward broad new horizons.

The Italian side expressed the intent to exert all efforts to achieve the final lifting of sanctions imposed on Libya due to Lockerbie crisis. United Nations sanctions were suspended by the UN Security Council on April 5 after Libya handed over two suspects wanted in connection with the explosion of a Pan Am passenger jet over Lockerbie, Scotland.

This came in the mutual statements from Omar El-Montassir, secretary of the Libyan public committee for external communication, and Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini at the beginning of the work of the joint Libyan - Italian committee that started yesterday in Syrte city, 450 kilometers east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
