Morocco determined to advance towards modernity, premier
Morocco, Politics, 8/6/1999

Moroccan Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi said he is confident that the unanimous will to rally around King Mohammed VI and to work hard will push Morocco further towards modernity.

In an interview with Moroccan weekly "La Vie Economique," Youssoufi said Moroccans are aware that they have entered a new era and discover every day the ability and qualities of their sovereign.

The Moroccans are aware that with the beginning of the 21st century, which coincides with the enthronement of H.M. King Mohammed VI, Morocco will change qualitatively.

Touching on the reforms initiated by his center-left coalition government, Youssoufi said besides the reform of justice which was started before the appointment of his government in March 1998, the Cabinet is busy reforming the administration, moralizing public life, struggling against corruption, against unemployment, against illiteracy, against poverty.

The prime minister also touched on the reforms to be introduced on the educational system, recalling that the national education commission set up by the late King Hassan II has devised a draft national charter on education and training that it will submit to King Mohammed VI on August 20.

The commission is chaired by royal advisor Abdelaziz Meziane Belfqih and gathers representatives of political parties, civil society and scholars.

Youssoufi equally spoke of the progress recorded by Morocco in matters of human rights during the past twenty years as well as of the efforts made to promote and improve the situation of the Moroccan women and children.

To a question on a possible Cabinet reshuffle, Youssoufi said for the time being the question is not raised. He added, however, that if one of the parties, or individuals participating in the coalition government no longer shows solidarity with the Cabinet or if they adopt stands that do not correspond to the general orientations of the executive, then the possibility of a Cabinet reshuffle may arise.

The prime minister also spoke of Moroccan - Algerian rapprochement, saying that the reopening of borders would surely take place in the near future.

Youssoufi was appointed in March 1998 by the late King Hassan II as prime minister of a center-left coalition government after decades of right-wing rule. Seven political parties are participating in the government.
