Reporters to accompany Knesset delegation to Damascus in September
Syria-Israel, Politics, 8/6/1999

Palestinian sources in Damascus told the London-based al-Hayat daily that Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa had agreed the proposal of Israeli Knesset member Azmi Bishara, who is also the chairman of the Arab Democratic Party, to include several Arab reporters and journalists in Israel in a delegation of 12 Arab members of the Israeli Knesset that is scheduled to visit Damascus at the beginning of next September.

Al-Sharaa told the chairman of the Palestinian National Salvation Front, Khaled al-Fahoum, of having "initial consent" for the visit of the Arab members of the Israeli Knesset to Damascus.

The Palestinian sources stated that Bishara proposed "having reporters and journalists in the delegation because this will be very important for Syria and the Arabs in Israel" and that Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa agreed to that during the meeting held between Bishara and al-Sharaa two days ago.

Several reporters accompanied a delegation of Arab Israelis during their visit to Damascus in 1998.

The Palestinian sources added that the delegation to visit Syria in September will include 12 members, including Nawaf Maslha and Saleh Tarif from the Labor Party and Husneih Jebara from Meretz Party, two parties which are taking part in the governmental coalition.

The Palestinian sources continued that the only Arab member of the Israeli Likud Party will not take part in the delegation.
