Sudan-Libya, Politics, 8/5/1999
The commission of the leadership of the Sudanese Democratic National Alliance has approved a Libyan initiative that provides for immediate cessation of military operations and media campaigns as well as for starting direct dialogue between the Sudanese government and opposition through a public forum for dialogue, for which a preliminary committee is to be formed under the auspices of Libya.
This was expressed in the Tripoli declaration which was approved and released on Monday night by the commission of the alliance's leadership at the conclusion of its meetings which lasted for four days, during which the participants discussed proposals implied by the Libyan initiative to find out a comprehensive political solution for the crisis in Sudan.
The commission also said in its Tripoli declaration that Libya is to maintain contacts with each of Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya to coordinate with them in its capacity as the advocate of initiatives concerning Sudan.
The Sudanese opposition, meanwhile, pledged to abide by what would be conducive to achieving security and stability and ensuring success for the march of peace in Sudan.
