Operation smile returns to Morocco to treat children suffering malformations

The US Operation Smile's medical volunteers started this Wednesday in Casablanca the second phase of their humanitarian mission devoted to Morocco for the treatment of about 150 children and young adults suffering from cleft lips, cleft palates and burns.
About 70 medical volunteers will provide reconstructive surgery in Casablanca and Agadir.
The all-volunteer team of plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and others is working in the operating rooms and patient wards at l'hopital Moulay Youssef in Casablanca and l'hopital Hassan II in Agadir.
The visiting medical professionals from the United States, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Hungary, the Philippines, Australia, Italy and Russia work side-by-side with their Moroccan colleagues during the medical mission.
Operation Smile's volunteers have treated 339 patients in Rabat and Casablanca since 1997. The missions are supported by the Moroccan Ministry of Health, as well as Rotary International, Royal Air Maroc and Citibank.
Operation Smile is a not-for-profit, volunteer medical services organization that provides reconstructive facial surgery to indigent children and young adults in developing countries and in the United States.
Based in Norfolk, Operation Smile emphasizes medical training and educational exchanges during international missions to build long-term self-sufficiency.
In April, Operation Smile concluded its World Journey of Hope 99, the largest-ever surgical mission dedicated to repairing cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.
During the nine-week World Journey of Hope 99 effort, more than 1,000 volunteers provided care to more than 5,300 children in 18 countries, including Morocco.
Operation Smile donated medical and educational equipment to each of the World Journey of Hope 99 host countries to foster improved health care year round.
