Prominent Iraqi poet dies in Damascus
Iraq-Syria, People, 8/4/1999

The Arab Writers Union and the General Federation of Arab Men of Letters in Syria as well as cultural and literary circles in the Arab states on Tuesday announced the death of the great Iraqi poet Abdul Wahab al-Bayyati who died in Damascus on Tuesday morning following a heart attack. He was 73.

The late poet is considered one of the pioneers of the modern Arab poetry school. He had a remarkable cultural and literary presence on the Arab and international levels, and he published several poetry and literary books. His death is considered a heavy loss to the Arab poetry and culture.

Following the Gulf War, the late poet lived in Jordan, later moving to Damascus where he lived until his death.
