Sudan-USA, Politics, 8/3/1999
Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir described the resolution of the US Congress concerning Sudan, which calls for imposing an air embargo on southern Sudan as forming a gross interference in interior affairs.
In his address in the graduation party of a new group from the faculty of war academy yesterday, he said, "The Sudanese armed forces undertook to defend Sudan and protect its unity."
Meanwhile, Turabi, the secretary general of the ruling National Conference in Sudan, said the U.S administration used the congressional resolution to frighten Sudan after its failure when using a sanctions policy and human rights accusations.
He added before a conference of the party's students that the problem of the south become very clear, which he described as being about political, adding that the southerners are able to solve this problem either by unity or separation.
He said that convening discussions between the Sudanese government and opposition depends on the opposition, referring to the importance of convening a meeting with Mohammed Othman El-Merghany, the leader of the opposition alliance.
