Kuwait on the ninth anniversary of the Iraqi invasion
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 8/3/1999
On Monday Kuwait recalled during the events of the ninth anniversary of the Iraqi invasion that the question of the prisoners and missing were still prevailing.
In its meeting on this occasion, the Kuwaiti Cabinet stressed that the quick release of the prisoners (more than 600) is a main demand of Kuwait in order to end sanctions imposed on it.
In a statement, the Kuwaiti Cabinet held the Iraqi goverment responsibile for "the state of partition and deteriorated conditions on the Arab level" and the "feelings of frustrations among the Iraqi people since the beginning of this national crisis."
The statement expressed the ability of the UN Security Council to take tough stances towards resolutions that "the Iraqi regime still refuses to carry out, foremost the rapid release of prisoners."
Meanwhile, the Iraqi dailies published on Monday stressed that the invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990 could not be avoided after Kuwait had carried out an anti-Iraqi scheme.
The Iraqi daily Babel, supervised by Ode, the eldest son of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, wrote: "Breaking into Kuwait was not an option among several other options. It was rather the only decisive option. It was to strike the spot of conspiracy and aggression which was in charge of destroying Iraq."
The Iraqi daily al-Jouhureyah said, "The rulers of Kuwait had pursued a policy aimed at damaging the interests of the people of Iraq through fabricating the crises on border demarcation, refusing the sincere Iraqi attempts to settle these crises, the deliberate theft of the Iraqi al-Rumeilah oil fields and lastly the deliberate reduction in oil prices through drowning the oil market with a surplus oil production."
