On the Israeli - Russian talks
Israel-Russia, Politics, 8/3/1999
Monte Carlo radio's correspondent in Moscow said on Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak reviewed during his meeting in Moscow with Russian President Boris Yeltsin the question of dialogue that has been framed between Tel Aviv and Damascus.
The correspondent quoted well-informed sources in Moscow as saying that Barak asked the Russians for explanations concerning a contract that provides for exporting an anti-aircraft missile system (S 300) to Syria.
President al-Assad had already discussed its details during his visit to the Russian capital last July.
The sources added that Barak expressed Tel Aviv's concern over the Russian - Iranian cooperation in the area of nuclear energy. The sources indicated that the issues of Syrian armament and Iranian nuclear industry were on top of the agenda of talks held earlier between then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Russian leadership.
The correspondent also quoted sources in Moscow as saying that Barak brought up a matter which is considered by Tel Aviv as a wave of hatred against semites in Russia following a series of mysterious incidents that recently took place against Jewish synagogues in several Russian cities, especially following the increased criticism in Russian dailies over the control of the Jewish financial centers on the economic and trade activities in Russia.
