Report: Britain no longer backing dam project in Turkey
Turkey-UK, Economics, 8/3/1999

The British daily the Guardian has asserted the intention of the British government to give up its backing for the project of building Eleiso dam on the Tigris river in Turkey.

The paper added that British Trade Minister Stephen Byers is currently making moves aimed at giving credibility to British trade following the criticism addressed to the British government by members of the House of Commons and from humanitarian aid agencies, as well as from countries bordering Turkey, which opposed the construction of the bank.

The paper explained that Syria, Iraq, Jordan had opposed the building of the dam because it constitutes a threat to the environment in the region and to water supplies.
