Report: Syria wants Jordan to return forged passports
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 8/2/1999

The London-based al-Quds al-Arabi daily has said that the Syrian government has asked its Jordanian counterpart officially to search for hundreds of forged Syrian passports used by Syrian opposition members who live in the Jordanian territories during their travel.

A Syrian diplomatic source in London told al-Quds al-Arabi that the question of the forged passport was raised through official correspondence recently with the Jordanian government when Syria asked for the return of these documents and preventing their use.

Syria estimates the number of these passports at 1,800. The Syrian source added that the forged passports are used by leaders and cadres of the Syrian Muslim Brothers group who have been hiding in Jordan since 1983, noting that these documents are used as original Syrian documents.

The paper said the position of the Jordanian government is not known towards this matter.
