King Mohammed VI makes of education top concern
Morocco, Education, 7/31/1999
King Mohammed VI said on Friday that education is on top of his concerns.
"The education issue is on top of our present and future concerns, due to its paramount importance and its impact on the training of generations and their preparation for active life," King Mohammed VI said in his first televised Throne Speech.
King Mohammed VI was proclaimed king of Morocco following the demise last week of his father, the late King Hassan II.
The education sector has been unable to keep pace with the changes that swept across Morocco. Waves of young graduates arrive annually at the employment market only to see their dreams shattered in view of the scarcity of employment. Unemployment currently stands at 19 percent of a 28 million strong population.
King Mohammed VI, who recalled his late father's decision to set up a national education commission, said the commission "crowned its laudable efforts with the devising of a draft national charter on education and training that it was about to submit to our august father."
The commission, set up by the late King Hassan II, is chaired by Royal Advisor Abdelaziz Meziane Belfqih and gathers representatives of political parties, the civil society and scholars. The commission toured several countries to benefit from their experience in educational fields.
King Mohammed VI's speech carried a strong will to eradicate unemployment and open wide horizons for the country's youth.
"We will grant this draft all the interest it deserves and that corresponds to our expectations in this vital field to defeat joblessness, eradicate its repercussions, keep the doors of employment wide open for our mounting youth and encourage it to exert efforts and show creativity and spirit of initiative," the king said.
