Salah El-Deen castle to be restored by Cairo UNESCO
Egypt, Economics, 7/31/1999

The permanent committee of UNESCO in Cairo has agreed to support the project of upgrading Salah El-Deen castle in Cairo, in cooperation with the Italian government, to enhance this region's tourist and cultural appeal.

The head of the Islamic antiquities sector in the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, Abd Allah El-Ahar, said the new project would be established over an area of 18 feddans which has been empty since British troops left Egypt in 1954.

The area was used for administrative buildings for the British army in Egypt and will lead to converting the region into a tourist and cultural attraction.
