UNESCO chief concerned by racist attacks in Spain
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 7/30/1999

UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor on Tuesday expressed concern over racist attacks waged against mosques and other buildings inhabited by Moroccan and Gambian immigrants in northeastern Spain.

In a statement made public, the UNESCO chief "voiced his full backing all those who marched to show tolerance, solidarity and co-existence after the series of racist attacks in Spain."

Morocco has expressed "worries over the unfortunate events" that targeted the Moroccan community in Spain.

The racist attacks were triggered by quarrels between Moroccan and Spanish youngsters.
