Moroccan premier meets economic operators
Morocco, Economics, 7/30/1999
Moroccan Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi held a meeting in Rabat on Wednesday with Morocco's economic operators to discuss ways of boosting the Moroccan economy, enhancing its competitiveness and attracting more foreign investment.
During the meeting, the Moroccan premier paid a moving tribute to late King Hassan II and recalled the late monarch's precious pieces of advice to entrepreneurs and on the best ways of using the receipts gained from the selling of the second GSM license.
An international consortium led-by Spain's Telefonica (TEF.MC) gained the Moroccan private mobile phone license for around $1.8 billion.
Youssoufi urged the Moroccan private sector to contribute actively to the country's socioeconomic development process and help in the building of the appropriate business atmosphere to gain the trust of foreign investors.
In 1998, Morocco drained about $500 million in direct foreign investment and was visited by two million foreign tourists.
A few days after the demise of King Hassan II last Friday of a heart failure, at the age of 70, the Moroccan premier has intensified contacts with local and foreign entrepreneurs urging them to resume activities in the kingdom and back the government's sustained development efforts.
Youssoufi called on Wednesday on Moroccan hotels to provide all necessary services to the tourists who flock to the kingdom for their summer holidays.
The Casablanca Bourse showed stability in shares trading after resuming Monday its brokerage activities, belying all fears of the investors who were expecting some disturbance in the Moroccan market after the demise of the late King Hassan II.
