Sudan returns confiscated possessions attack to the opposition
Sudan, Politics, 7/28/1999
A Sudanese newspaper said yesterday that the Sudanese government is currently getting ready to return possessions confiscated from the leader of opposing Democratic National Alliance, Mohammed Othman El-Merghani.
The government El-Akbar El-Youm newspaper quoted a source in the Democratic Federal Party as saying these measures are considered the first steps toward returning all possessions confiscated from El-Merghani, then settling all remaining issues.
El-Merghani leads the Democratic Federal Party as well as the Democratic National Alliance.
The newspaper added that a two-story building in Khartoum where El-Merghani used to live before leaving Sudan ten years ago was evacuated last Thursday to set up for handing over.
The Democratic Federal Party was considered the second-largest political party in Sudan before President Omar Hassan El-Bashir came to power in a 1989 coup. The party is a prominent member of the Democratic National Alliance, headquartered in Eriteria, and fights to topple the government of El-Bashir.
