New man accused in the coup attempt arrested in Qatar

The Qatari authorities on Tuesday arrested a new man who is accused in the failed coup attempt that took place in February 1996.

AFP quoted a statement released by the Qatari security forces saying that Qatari citizen Ghanem Saleh Ali Mubarak al-Kawari, who was accused in the said coup attempt was arrested with Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem Bin Hamad al-Thani, the first person who is accused in the attempt, and the two men were presented before the court.

On Sunday, the Qatari authorities announced the detention of Sheikh Hamad, who was a former economy minister and a former police officer and a member of the ruling al-Thani family.

On October 26, 1997 the trial of the 121 men accused in the coup attempt started in Doha. The court is expected to release its first decision on December 1 this year.
