Lebanese president, prime minister confer with Polish FM

Lebanese President Emile Lahoud on Monday in Beirut received Polish Foreign Minister Bronislaw Geremek, who started an official visit to Lebanon on Sunday night.

Bilateral relations and the situation in the region were reviewed during the meeting. Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss has asserted Lebanon's unwavering stand concerning the Middle East peace process in the region. He stressed Lebanon's rejection of any security arrangements proposed by Israel to implement UN resolution 425.

The Lebanese prime minister said during his meeting with the Polish minister and members of the accompanying delegation that the UN resolution should be completely and unconditionally implemented by Israel.

Talks also dealt with Lebanese - Polish relations as well as economic and financial matters between the two countries.

On bilateral relations between Lebanon and Poland, the Polish minister said that establishing such bilateral friendship and cooperation was done in a successful political dialogue in the economic, cultural and educational fields and in unearthing monuments.

Geremek expressed his happiness over signing the non-double taxation policy between the two countries, noting this agreement is the legal means for a better economic cooperation.

In a similar meeting, the speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, discussed with Geremek bilateral relations and the situation in the region.

In a statement following the meeting, the Polish minister said that Poland views with hope and great optimism resuming peace negotiations in the region, noting his country's backing of UN Security Council resolutions, foremost being UN resolution 425.

He indicated that there is historical cooperation between the Lebanese and Polish parliaments, hoping that this bilateral cooperation will be strengthened in various political and economic areas.
