Regional-Israel, Politics, 7/26/1999
Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak expressed in Rabat Sunday the wish that "King Mohammed Ibn Al-Hassan will support the peace process in the Middle East."
In an interview with MAP, the Israeli premier, who attended on Sunday the funeral of the late King Hassan II, said he wished "King Mohammed Ibn Al-Hassan will, like his father the late Hassan II, support the peace process in order to guarantee a better future for the peoples of the region."
He added that all the countries in the region have a great respect for the late King Hassan II in view of the leading role he played, throughout over 20 years, to put the peace process on track.
Barak further underlined that the results reached so far are the fruit of the late sovereign's backing.
Expressing optimism as to the peace efforts in the region, Barak said Israel is prompted by the desire to carry on the action initiated in the Middle East. It is high time peace is achieved, a peace that is wished by everybody in Israel, Barak said, adding, "We should work together to reach that goal."
On his part, Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy called for optimism as to peace prospects and expressed his country's will to reach a comprehensive peace and to spare no efforts to this end.
Also part of the Israeli delegation was Shimon Peres, former prime minister who is in the new cabinet minister of regional cooperation. Peres stressed that the late king of Morocco had been constantly concerned to give a new impetus to peace in the Middle East and had tirelessly endeavored to encourage negotiations between Israel and all countries of the region, including Syria.
He added that the late King Hassan II was also seeking to bring views closer between Israel and Syria as he did with Egypt and Palestine. Regarding negotiations with Syria, he said that the two sides should make concessions if they want to reach a genuine peace.
