Sudan calls for ceasing fire in its south
Sudan, Politics, 7/26/1999

Sudan has called for a complete ceasefire in all parts of Sudan.

AFP quoted Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael as saying in a press conference he held following a round of negotiations with rebels from the south that the Sudanese government calls for a comprehensive ceasefire in order to ensure the proper atmospheres for peace negotiations and in order to facilitate humanitarian aid for southern Sudan.

However, negotiations between the Sudanese government and the rebels ended without scoring great progress except a decision to establish a permanent secretariat dedicated to the Sudanese peace process in Nairobi. The delegations decided to meet again after two months, according to statements made by Kenya's foreign minister, Bonaya Godana, who presides over the mediation committee of the governmental commission for development and fighting desertification, which includes countries of the region.
