Moroccan embassy in Damascus opens book of condolences
Syria-Morocco, Politics, 7/26/1999

The Moroccan embassy in Damascus on Sunday announced that it will open its book of condolences as of today to mark the death of King Hassan II of Morocco. The process of offering condolences will last for three days, and the embassy is open between 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. for that purpose, SANA reported.

Syria participated in the funeral of King Hassan with a delegation that included Vice President Zuheir Masharqa, Prime Minister Mahmoud al-Zou'bi, the foreign minister and the minister of environmental affairs.

In a statement to SANA's correspondent in Rabat, Masharqa said: "We came to Rabat to convey in the name of President al-Assad and the people of Syria heartfelt condolences to King Muhammad Bin Hassan and the brotherly people of Morocco."

Masharqa added, "The late king was a great leader whose absence has left a big vacuum not only at the level of Morocco but on the Arab, Islamic and international levels."

He continued, "King Hassan II was interested in consolidating Arab solidarity to counter challenges and prevent dangers. He was always working to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region which restores the occupied Golan and other occupied Arab territories."

On the other hand, the new Moroccan king accepted the condolences of the Syrian delegation and the condolences of the Arab and foreign kings and heads of states who took part in the funeral procession of the late Moroccan king.
