Yemeni president winds up Maghreb tour
Morocco-Yemen, Politics, 7/23/1999
President Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen left Rabat on Thursday, winding up a Maghreban tour that also took him to Libya, Algeria and Morocco.
While in Rabat, the Yemeni President held tete-a-tete talks with King Hassan, II who hosted a dinner banquet in his honor.
President Saleh had told reporters upon arrival in Morocco on Wednesday that he would review with King Hassan II bilateral relations and the latest developments on the Arab and international scenes.
He said talks would also cover preparations for the Arab summit and the results of the talks he had in this regard with Libyan leader Moammar Gadafi and President Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria.
The Yemeni president stressed the importance of enhancing inter-Arab cooperation and complementarity to enable the Arab states to take up the challenges they are facing.
Yemen, he said, pins great hopes on the key role King Hassan II plays in cementing Arab ranks and fostering Arab solidarity.
The Yemeni news agency, Saba, had earlier said President Saleh's Maghreb tour was meant to coordinate Arab efforts to hold an Arab summit and restore Arab solidarity.
Yemen is among the Arab states calling for the holding of an Arab summit.
The possibility to hold an Arab summit is recurrent in all inter-Arab talks, and the issue was discussed in detail last June by King Hassan II and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak during the latter's visit to Morocco.
The latest Arab summit was held in Cairo in June 1996 with the participation of all Arab states, except Iraq.
