Sahrawi shioukh, observers call for vigilance to foil enemy maneuvers
Morocco, Politics, 7/23/1999
Sahrawi shioukh and observers participating in the identification operation on Wednesday renewed mobilization around King Hassan II and called for more vigilance to foil the maneuvers of the enemies of Morocco's territorial integrity.
The shioukh and observers, who were attending a meeting in Laayoune with a large ministerial delegation, unanimously voiced refusal to participate in a referendum, depriving one single son of the Moroccan Sahara of his legitimate right to participate in the referendum.
The referendum, scheduled to be held in July 2000 under the aegis of the United Nations, seeks to determine whether the Sahara -- a former Spanish colony retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accords -- sets up on its own or remains part of Morocco.
The Sahrawi shioukh and observers stressed that they will to spare no effort to ensure the success of their mission within a spirit of responsibility and loyal patriotism, as dictated by the national duty and faithfulness to the oath of allegiance binding them to the Moroccan sovereigns and bequeathed from father to son.
They also hailed the success won by Morocco in the identification operation, adding that this first victory puts Morocco in a strong position, despite the irregularities that mark the operation and the systematic exclusion of thousands of Moroccan Sahrawis with the complicity of some members of the MINURSO (U.N. Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara).
The Sahrawis have always reaffirmed their Moroccan identity through their participation in the various popular consultations held in Morocco and the sacrifice made throughout centuries for the defense of the unity of the nation, they said.
