Egyptian FM receives a message from his Iranian counterpart

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa received a message on Thursday from his Iranian counterpart, Kamal Kharazi, on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of July 23 revolution, in which Kharazi expressed desire for close cooperation with Egypt in all fields.

The Iranian initiative came following the tough stand expressed by Egyptian presidential advisor Osama El-Baz toward resuming diplomatic relations between the two countries in retaliation for Iran permitting extremists in Tehran to inaugurate a statue of Khaled al-Islambuli, the killer of former Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat.

However, Egyptian diplomatic sources told the London-based al-Hayat daily that, "Cairo is not a side in Iranian internal disputes between the extremists and the moderates. We deal with Iran in its capacity as a state rather than with a trend at the expense of another."

The Egyptian diplomatic sources spoke about Egypt's desire to strengthen relations with Tehran, after Tehran has taken measures that are helpful toward resuming diplomatic relations between the two countries on the level of embassies.

The sources continued that, "Iran was the side which took the decision to sever relations in 1979, and we are not in a hurry to raise the level of diplomatic representation, and we are waiting for Iranian steps to achieve a qualitative turning point in the relations between the two countries."
