Jewish extremists try to storm al-Aqsa mosque
Regional, Religion, 7/22/1999
A group of Jewish extremists attempted to force their way into the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem last night but the Jerusalemites pushed them back, the Palestinian radio reported.
The radio said that Israeli police and border guard forces were rushed to the scene and started beating the Palestinians.
However the Jerusalemites continued gathering to fend off any attacks by the Jewish extremists from the "temple mount faithful" movement, who are expected to repeat their attempts this Thursday to mark the alleged destruction of the temple by the Babylonians in the VI century BC.
The Jews allege that the Al-Aqsa mosque was built on the site of the destroyed temple.
For Moslems, the mosque is the third holiest shrine.
