Jordanian released in Syria return back to Amman
Jordan-Syria, Politics, 7/22/1999
The Jordanian paper al-Aswaq quoted Jordanian Parliament member Muhammad al-Azeyadah, who is also the chairman of the freedoms committee at the Jordanian Parliament, as saying that the Syrian authorities have released six Jordanian detainees who arrived in Amman on Tuesday via land, in the course of a general pardon released by Syrian President Hafez al-Assad.
Al-Azeyadah described the release of those Jordanians as a crowning for the visit to Syria of Jordan's King Abdullah and his meeting with President Hafez al-Assad. He considered this act from the Syrian side as an indication of warm relations between the two countries.
On the other hand, the chairman of the committee of the families of the Jordanian detainees in Syrian jails, lawyer Ammar al-Sharqawi, called for releasing all those detainees, especially as some of them had spent ten years in prison, noting that this step is considered as an expression of detente between the two states.
Al-Sharqawi added that the families of the detainees who were released extended their thanks to King Abdullah and are looking forward to the release others. He added that the families of the detainees also call on the Syrian president to release all Jordanian detainees in Syrian jails, noting that their number exceeds 400.
