Sudan warns against rebellions
Sudan, Politics, 7/21/1999
Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael has warned against statements made by the chairman of a rebel movement in southern Sudan, John Garang, saying these statement are signals in preparation for an attack by Garang's movement against the Sudanese forces.
Ismael, who is leading the Sudanese delegation to negotiations with the southern Sudanese opposition which started on Monday in Nairobi, called in a statement he made in Khartoum on Tuesday on the international community to pressure Garang to abide by a comprehensive cease-fire in southern Sudan in order to facilitate the relief operations for people who suffer from the drought and to contribute to achieving peace.
Meanwhile, political sources said on Tuesday that the Nairobi negotiations will not be conducive to a nearby detente, noting in this respect the content of the press statement proposed by Garang to the negotiation and the press conference Garang held, during which he announced approval to extend the cease-fire decision to an area of 70% of southern Sudan.
