Confrontations continue in south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 7/21/1999

The Israeli occupation forces on Tuesday continued to launch attacks against areas close to the occupied part of south Lebanon. Lebanese security sources said Israel's heavy artillery stationed in the Abbad and Daheira positions bombarded the towns of Barachit, Yater and Kafra as well as al-Zaatar mountain and al-Assai valley.

The sources added that some shells fell over the populated areas of Barachit.

The Israeli attacks coincided with the intensive heavy machine-gun fire by the Israeli troops against the demarcation lines in the western sector.

Further reports from south Lebanon said that the Lebanese resistance denied allegations of an Israeli army spokesman who said that the Israeli forces and their militia allies had foiled an offensive by the Lebanese resistance who intended on Monday night to attack the eastern sector of occupied south Lebanon.

On Tuesday morning the Israeli artillery shelled the town of Yahmour - Beafort, resulting in damage to the house of a citizen.

Further news reports from south Lebanon said an Israeli force stormed into Meis al-Jabal town, arrested Lebanese citizen Tareq Haidar and took him to al-Khiam prison.

Meanwhile, an Israeli patrol drove on Arnoun - Beafourt road and carried out an extensive mopping-up campaign in the suburbs of Arnoun, Yahmour and al- Hamra farm.

Moreover, the Israeli forces reinforced their positions in Teir Harfa and Shame's hill. News reports from the south said the two positions over Monday night witnessed Israeli movements and the entry of a number of vehicles to the said positions.

The Israeli movements were coupled with Israeli flights over the western and central sectors.

More reports from south Lebanon said that fierce clashes erupted on Tuesday afternoon between the Lebanese resistance, on the one hand, and the Israeli forces and their Sout Lebanon Army militia allies, on the other, inside the occupied part of south Lebanon. In a statement, the Lebanese resistance said a group of resistance fighters observed military reinforcements inside Balat position in the western sector, and immediately attacked it by rockets and mortar guns.

The statement added that the position and soldiers manning it were directly hit. Ten minutes, later, an Israeli military helicopter landed south of the position and evacuated casualties.

A third Lebanese national statement said a resistance group attacked a joint Israeli - SLA position at Barachit hill in the central sector of the occupied part of south Lebanon.
