Jordan, Spain for reviving Middle East peace

King Abdullah Bin Hussein of Jordan on Tuesday expressed his conviction that Spain is able to support and help activate the Middle East peace process because of its good relations with all parties concerned. This was expressed during a meeting held between the king and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar at the end of Aznar's two-day visit to Jordan.

For his part, Aznar stressed his country's confidence in the role played by Jordan in the Middle East peace process.

Earlier in the day, the chairman of the Jordanian higher council, Zeid al-Refa, asserted the importance of reviving negotiations on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks in order to reach an agreement on the basis of Israel's withdrawal from south Lebanon and the Golan Heights to the June 4, 1967 border lines.

During his meeting with Aznar and members of the accompanying delegation in Amman on Tuesday, al-Refa added there is a key role for Spain in order to give the Middle East peace process a push forward on the grounds of the Madrid terms of reference.

Al-Refa called for implementing signed agreements and starting final status negotiations on the Palestinian - Israeli tracks.

During his meeting with Aznar, of the Jordanian Parliament Speaker Abdul Hadi al-Majali asserted Jordan's commitment to continuing work in order to achieve a just and comprehensive peace.

Aznar stressed that peace negotiations will be ultimately conducive to the establishment of a Palestinian state and consolidation of the basics of a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
