Al-Assad, emir of Bahrain hold talks in Damascus

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Bahraini Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Issa al-Khaleifa on Tuesday evening held a meeting at the Damascus al-Chaab palace. It was attended by members of Sheikh Hamad's accompanying delegation and the two Syrian vice presidents, prime minister, and ministers of foreign affairs, information and the interior, SANA reported.
Sheikh Hamad arrived in Damascus on Tuesday on an official visit to the country. Talks dealt with situations in the region and the Arab arena, developments concerning efforts exerted to relaunch the Middle East peace process, bilateral relations and the joint desire to develop these relations.
Sheikh Hamad was welcomed at the airport by President al-Assad, Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam, the Cabinet ministers and high-ranking officials.
In an arrival statement reporters, Sheikh Hamad said: "We are happy to be in Damascus today at the generous hospitality of President Hafez al-Assad, a man of remarkable historic Arab stands, and among our brothers, the people of Syria. Our visit to Syria is but a sincere expression of action over the development of bilateral relations and joint cooperation between Bahrain and Syria on all levels. We assert our desire to consolidate and strengthen the brotherly relations and constructive cooperation to serve the joint interests of the two sisterly peoples."
The Emir of Bahrain added in his arrival statement: "There is no doubt that our meeting with President Hafez al-Assad who has a wise and far-sighted character, will enable us to establish new prospects of joint cooperation in different fields through developing the mechanism of work at all levels to meet the aspirations and hopes of the two brotherly countries' peoples as well as for maintaining further bilateral cooperation."
Sheikh Hamad added, "Consultations and discussions with President Hafez al-Assad concerning affairs of the Arab nation during this historic phase are of great importance. This is due to Syria's key role in supporting Arab issues, enhancing Arab solidarity and work for the interest of the Arab nation."
He continued, "We want to avail ourselves of this opportunity to praise Syria's development and prosperity."
Sheikh Hamad is accompanied by a senior delegation including Foreign Minister Muhammad Bin Mubarak al-Khaleifa, Minister of the Interior Sheikh Muhammad Bin Khaleifa al-Khaleifa, and Minister for Cabinet Affairs and Information Muhammad Ibrahim al-Mutawa.
